In either case, a good night sleep is essential to perform your best in the day time or whenever you work. Let us say that you feel your best after 8 hours sleep. However not like in the wee years ago that you could get up when you woke up, there is a need for alarm clocks, and alarm clocks can get you up in 2 hours if need be! However, how do you feel if you need 8 hours sleep and you get up in 5 hours? Your head can feel like a goldfish in a bowl, and we walk around hazy all day. In essence you can't perform your best. There are solutions, and I think you are beginning to see how sleep affects us. However, sleep is not just an importance.
Yes it can be as importance as fitness and exercise, however, there is a need for quality of sleep. The quality of your sleep is also essential.
